Christmas cards remain popular as ever
Luddite's rejoice - in a hi-tech communications age of e-mail's, faxes and mobile phones,
the humble cardboard Christmas card has never been more popular.
A record 55 million articles passed through the mail network last Tuesday, according
to Australia Post.
And while it wasn't until last year that 50 million items were handled in one day,
posties have been delivering that volume daily in the lead-up to the last Christmas of
the millennium.
The five per cent annual increase in what internet junkies dismiss as snail mail comes
despite electronic Christmas cards now being widely available for people to send via e-mail
at the touch of a button.
A spokesman for Australia Post says it may be because people just like the smell,
feel, and personal nature of greeting cards.
