Qld:Police officer assaulted

Two men have been charged after a policeman was hit in the face in the northern Queensland
city of Cairns.

Police say two officers went to a house in Grafton Street about midnight to investigate
a reported disturbance.

But when they tried to restrain a 31-year-old man, a 28-year-old man intervened.

They say a police officer was punched in the face several times during the scuffle
and needed several stitches.

Both men will appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on assault charges today.
