NSW: Paper apologises to former police commissioner

A defamation case brought by former New South Wales Police Commissioner TONY LAUERagainst the Sydney Morning Herald and former Liberal Party adviser GARY STURGESS has beensettled for an undisclosed amount.

Mr LAUER had sued over a 1995 article which alleged he had held secret meetings withthe then shadow police minister TED PICKERING and Mr STURGESS, an adviser to the thenopposition, to prepare the opposition for the forthcoming election.

In an apology read in court by TOM HUGHES QC for the paper and Mr STURGESS, the SydneyMorning Herald said it accepted that no such meeting had taken place.

As part of the confidential settlement the paper will also publish an apology.

Mr LAUER also reached a confidential settlement with Mr STURGESS.
